What is air quality?

Air quality is about the condition of the air around us. The air is made up of different gases, but the air quality gets worse when more pollutants get into the air and change the balance of the gases. Understanding air quality is really important, because it directly impacts our well-being and the natural surroundings.

What gases are in the air?

There are lots of different gases in the air. The most well known ones are Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen, Helium, Methane and Hydrogen. Each gas has a chemical symbol, and you can see these in the image.

Do you know which gas makes up most of the air? You might be surprised to know that is is not Oxygen. It is actually Nitrogen! Nitrogen is a neutral gas - it is not good for us or bad for us, but it is key to life on earth.

The make up of air is a perfect balance for us to live. Nitrogen, Oxygen and something called Argon are the three main gases in the air, and everything else is there in tiny amounts.
